So, it’s coming up to that time of year again.
February 14th is not exactly everyone’s favourite day. Even those of you with partners will probably agree with me, to some extent, as trying to find the perfect gift, or plan the perfect romantic gesture, can be much more effort than it’s worth. Let’s face it, you don’t need to wait until Valentine’s day to tell someone how much you care about them, and for many people, it can seem like Valentine’s day was only invented to make single people feel lonely.
Personally, my boyfriend and I like to give each other a small token gift – something inexpensive but meaningful. However, it isn’t always easy to come up with a good idea. That’s why I thought that I would share a list of 4, inexpensive ideas, which are simple, but romantic. I have also included some more expensive alternatives, as I know that there are some of you who enjoy pushing the boat out a bit, and doing something a little more extravagant. Either way, before reading on, you may like to check out my tips on daily skincare and makeup to get your skin looking it’s best for your date.
However, I do also recognise that not all of you will have a partner to share the day with. So, I have also tried to give you a little inspiration for ways in which you can incorporate these ideas into your own pamper day, either with friends, or for a bit of well deserved ‘me time’.
Whatever your position is this Valentine’s, you should find something here to help you plan your day.
This first idea is something which I actually gave to my boyfriend last year, and it went down amazingly! I made him a collage of lots of cut outs, wrappers, train tickets…anything which represented a particular memory, things which we enjoyed doing together, and even certain sayings, or jokes, which we had invented between ourselves. Once you are done, you can frame it and present it in a little gift box to add a little extra special touch.
It’s amazing what you can find to include in your collage, once you start to look. Having a flick through old magazines can help give you ideas of what you might like to include, and you may find that it helps to trigger certain memories of you both, as a couple, which you had totally forgotten about. Creating something like this makes for a totally unique, and personal gift, which your loved one will treasure forever.
It is also something which you could make with a group of friends, as a reminder of a special trip that you took together, or of a particular gap year experience.
If homemade gifts aren’t really your thing, and you have a bit of extra money to spend, then a great alternative is a ‘Location Bracelet’ from ‘notonthehighstreet‘. All you need to do is use the map on Google to find the co-ordinates of your chosen location, and fill them in on the order form. The bracelet will then have the co-ordinates engraved on it, and you can also get your initials engraved on the catch. Choose a location which means a lot to both of you, like where you had your first date, or where you got engaged e.t.c. No one else will know the significance of the engraving, but to your partner, it is a constant reminder of your special time together.
Cook up a storm
Not everyone likes to go out on Valentine’s day. Restaurants are full, towns are busy, and, even if you have a partner, it’s not always fun to be in the middle of all the fuss. If you can relate to this, then why not choose to stay in this year, and cook something special instead. There are so many ways in which you can make a super romantic breakfast, or dinner, for your partner, and it won’t cost a fortune. You could try using some cute little Heart Shaped Egg Rings, and an adorable ‘I Love You’ Toast Stamp to make a romantic breakfast surprise.
If an evening meal is more your style, then there are lots of cute little items available, which you can use to help create a romantic ambiance, and make the table look extra special. Instead of standard candles, why not try some little heart shaped ones, use some heart bunting to drape around the table, sprinkle the table with some little hearts, such as silk hearts which you can both have as a keepsake afterwards, or serve their tea in a little romantic mug, which they can also keep. It’s all very simple, but the sentiment, and the thought which you have put into it, will show them how much you care.
If you prefer to treat that ‘special someone’ to a slap-up meal out, then try choosing a restaurant which is a little more special than ones which they would normally choose themselves. Maybe try a nice hotel, or somewhere that does something like Tapas, where you can choose a few different dishes, and share them…which is rather romantic.
Having a few friends over, and cooking a meal together, is a great way for any of you singles to let your hair down and treat yourselves too. Decide on what you are going to make beforehand, and have everyone bring different ingredients. This helps to keep the cost very low. You should try to be adventurous with what you make. The more crazy the dish, the more fun you are likely to have. Oh, and don’t forget to have someone bring the dessert! 😉

Afternoon Tea Anyone?
Sometimes, it’s nice to do something completely different, and Valentine’s is the perfect excuse! So why not treat your other half to afternoon tea, homemade style! It really isn’t as daunting as it may sound. Get yourself a little heart shaped cookie cutter, and use it to create heart shaped sandwiches, biscuits (be sure to chill the biscuits before cooking to ensure they keep their shape), scones, mini sponge cakes (just make a plain sponge, in a swiss roll tin, and use your cutter to cut heart shapes out of it, which you can then sandwich together)…..you can even make mini cupcakes and decorate them with little edible heart decorations. You can make as much, or as little, as you like. Try to plan everything a few days before hand so that you don’t leave it all to the last minute. You can even buy some little heart chocolates to add to your assortment of treats. It may all take a little extra effort, but it will all be worth it when the two of you sit down to a delicious, homemade, Valentine’s afternoon tea, in the comfort of your own home.
There are many places across the country where you can go for afternoon tea, if you do prefer to go out. Most nice hotels, and even some cafes now offer it. Many of these places will also offer different ‘packages’, and so you can choose to spend slightly more, for something a little extra special.
Of course, both of these suggestions would also be fantastic for you and a few friends to try out. Making afternoon tea together could be a lot of fun, and the more of you there are, the less time it will take. Or, if you really aren’t one for standing in the kitchen, then go ahead and treat yourselves to a nice afternoon tea in town.
There are so many of us now who get very little time to ourselves. Whether it’s work, family, friends or children, it can be difficult to get some ‘time out’ in the day. If that sounds like your partner, then why not give them a gift which says, ‘take some well deserved time to pamper yourself,’ and make them up a little gift box of some of their favourite cosmetics? Try including a bath bomb, bubble bath, shower gel or body scrub, depending on whether they have a bath in their home. Some body lotion, a pair of fluffy slippers, or a nice candle are also some great options. If you need a bit of inspiration, have a look at Bomb Cosmetics. They have a fantastic range of amazing cosmetics, which are all natural and handmade, so it’s something a wee bit different too.

If you really want to treat them to something incredibly special, then a spa trip may be a good option. You could choose to send them for a couple of treatments on an afternoon, or if you have managed to save some extra money, you could even book them into the hotel overnight. Of course, this doesn’t need to be on Valentine’s weekend. You could book them in for a few weeks down the line, when things will be quieter. It will give them something special to look forward to, and will be appreciated just as much.
It goes without saying that both these suggestions are, again, very well suited to you if you are single and looking for a little pamper session. Ordering a few special products for a relaxing night to yourself, or organising a spa trip with a close friend or two, are great ways to unwind, and give yourself a bit of well deserved TLC.
So there you have it! 4 ideas which I hope have helped to get you thinking outside the box a little, showing you that you don’t need to spend a lot of money in order to give your partner, or yourself, something special. Let me know in the comments if you’re going to try any of these ideas! I’d also love to know if you have any other suggestions, or if you are planning something fun with friends this Valentine’s. If you aren’t doing anything at all, then that’s also cool, and I hope you still enjoyed this post!
Just remember, whether you’re in a relationship or single, you deserve to be made to feel special!
Until next time guys!
